The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food deserts as areas of low income households, inadequate access to transportation and a limited number of food retailers providing fresh produce and healthy groceries for affordable prices. Unfortunately, many regions of Dayton, specifically West Dayton, fall into the category of a food desert as depicted in the neighboring image.

Also according to the USDA, food insecurity can be a short or long time scenario in which someone does not have consistent access to enough food to live a healthy, active life. Dayton's food desert is the reason why many households in the area suffer from food insecurity. Seven Seed Sowers is committed to donating food to local food banks in an effort to combat local food insecurity.
